It is not easy to rent a home. People can only discover faults with the property after they have moved in and signed the lease agreement. Sometimes landlords restrict you from turning on the air conditioner during hot weather or entering the residence without your permission. So, reading such stories makes you realize how difficult it is to locate a regular place to live.

We hired a ʜᴀᴜɴᴛᴇᴅ flat. My roommate stated she could feel the ɢʜᴏsᴛ of the elderly lady who had lived here before us. But that was not the reason I moved away.
There was no hot water—only a boiler. And it was old. It was constantly malfunctioning; I had to phone the landlady (who lived nearby), and she did some magic to turn it on.
But after a week of this insanity, I realized I’d grown accustomed to having hot water available at all times. So I moved out.

When I wasn’t at home, my previous landlord would enter my unit without notice. How did I know? The toilet seat was up (I am female). © mamabear-50 / Reddit

Recently, the landlady contacted me and told me I had two days to leave because her relatives were visiting the city and she wanted them to stay in this flat. I asked for additional time, but she refused. I was desperate because I knew I would be unable to locate a new place in two days.
I miraculously discovered a new flat. My manager at work observed that I was depressed and asked me why. I told him everything. He stated his wife had a vacant house and I could reside there. I was overjoyed, packed my belongings, and moved out.
Suddenly, the landlady of the old flat called me again, saying that the plans had changed and I could stay. I refused. She attempted to persuade me and even decreased the rent (I always paid on time and kept the place clean, which she appreciated). But I still did not agree. I rented a flat but did not move in straight away since I needed to relocate my belongings first. One morning, I opened the front door to see a man reclining on my pink sofa. I did not close the door and began yelling. So he casually buttoned his coat, as if everything was OK, called me by name, handed me the keys, and departed.
It turned out it was the landlord’s brother. This fellow used to live here and appears to have decided to spend the night here as he did in the past. He ate all of my chocolates, by the way. This story has left me traumatized for life.

I rented a home. Everything was good until the landlady split up with her boyfriend. She’s already moved some of her belongings to the garage. And now she’s moaning about excessive rent charges.
I get a feeling she wants to live here. I texted her that we have a contract, and I am not comfortable with her remaining here at all. It’s been two days and she has not responded. I do not know what to do. © pastelbroccoli0414 / Reddit

I urgently needed a place to reside. So I rented a room in a 3-bedroom apartment with two roommates. The landlady strongly told me that no boyfriends were allowed. Fine.
Then she told me that the washing machine didn’t operate and was being repaired. My housemates subsequently told me that the washing didn’t function at all, so they had to hand wash.
But the worst part was the refrigerator. It was so noisy that I was unable to sleep. After two weeks, I moved out.

I was unloading boxes from the back of my car and transporting them into the apartment. Because the door is automatic, it closes after me as it always does. When I try to open the door to return to my car, it does not open. The handle has totally seized up and will not move.
I’m locked inside my flat, and it is the only way out. So I decided to contact the emergency maintenance number. This occurred at 6 p.m.
With the prior leasing business, if you phoned emergency maintenance, you would be connected to an on-call person who would normally arrive at your unit within 15 minutes. With the new one, I now have voicemail service. So, I left a message informing them of the problem.
About 15 minutes later, I received a callback. “Yeah, you called. What do you want?” asks the unpleasant voice on the other end. I describe the matter and am informed, “Uhhhh, let me call my supervisor and see what he wants me to do.” It is currently 9:37 p.m. I have yet to receive another callback.
Fortunately, my neighbor noticed my car door was open (after getting the boxes) and came to check on me. The door is finally open, but it must remain propped up or I will be stuck again. There is still no maintenance. © Manofmanyhats19 / Reddit

I wanted to move to a new place. I came, and it was filthy! The landlady’s son talked to me dismissively but said they would hire a cleaner, who would arrive in four days. So now I have to live in this mess. And a dog was running about in their yard.
I’m nervous around dogs due to a horrific incident, so I always seek apartments with no dog policy. If I had known, I would not have rented a house with a dog. In summary, I intend to terminate the lease, even though I will incur financial losses. © toclosetoquestionit / Reddit

My partner and I decided to take our relationship to the next level by moving in together. We found the ideal location for a very cheap price. We have recently moved in.
Suddenly, the landlord told us that he had caught his wife cheating on him. They had a fight, and he wants us to leave as soon as possible since he is going to live here himself. This is a dreadful issue! © sonteheridosin / Reddit

A man I know told me a story about a property he rented. It turns out that the adjacent flat was an Airbnb. The people that stayed there partied every night.
It was quite noisy. He could not sleep. So he stayed for a week and then moved out.

The landlord forces renters to use particular (and highly expensive) eco-friendly cleaning materials and prohibits the use of colognes and scents. Controlling such details feels like an odd violation of privacy to me, but the lease has already been signed. Is this lawful? © Piehogger / Reddit

I was young and naive, so I agreed to rent a two-bedroom apartment with a friend. Everything would be OK, but my buddy had two rambunctious youngsters.
We got along OK when I only visited them, but now they constantly break into my room. I begged and yelled, but nothing worked. Considering I work from home, it was terrible, and there was no solitude in the evening. I wasn’t prepared for this.

The landlord wants to evict me under some ridiculous excuse. She alleges I emailed her an image containing immoral stuff. However, there is just one thing. I do not even have her email address.

I’m about to move out of my apartment, and my landlord has begun to show people around. We have a basement/storage room that has had a rat problem since we moved here, and the landlord has done as little as possible to address it. I was home for a tour today, and as they were about to enter this area, I told them to be careful since there had been rodents in there, and I didn’t want anything tracked into the apartment.
After the tour, the landlord instructs me not to discuss any issues with the flat, and “if this is difficult” for me, they will request that I not be present for tours. I’m wondering how. I still live here, after all. © TheBiggest*** / Reddit
