Babysitting may be a difficult and rewarding experience, but it can also be overwhelming and stressful. That’s how a 17-year-old girl felt when she was supposed to look after her nephews on a family vacation to Disneyland. She chose not to go on vacation by claiming to lose her passport at the airport, and then spent a week at home relaxing. She published her tale on Reddit, asking the public if she made a wise or selfish decision for her own well-being.
“I am a 17-year-old girl who still lives at home with her parents. My sister (28 years old) is married and has two children, aged 5 and 3 respectively.
When she comes over to see my parents, they put me with the kids. This would not be an issue. However, she does not pay a visit in the evening. She will visit for a week, during which time I shall work as an unpaid nanny.
If we go to a restaurant, I have to amuse them since my mother has to speak with my sister and brother-in-law. “You get the picture.”
“My parents decided that because this was my final summer before becoming an adult, we would go to Disneyland to celebrate my graduation.
When I inquired who was going, they responded ‘just the three of us’.
But when we arrived at the airport, my sister and her family were there. Surprisingly, they were also headed to Disneyland.
I reached inside my backpack and retrieved my passport. I placed it in my sock.
When we got to international security, I could not find it. We searched everywhere. I had to take Uber home and missed my flight. Oh well, I get to stay at home alone for a week of peace and quiet.”
“My parents were furious at me for losing my passport. The money they spent on my travel and admittance was a waste. Darn!
My mother and sister have both posted about how difficult it is to be in Disneyland with two little children. They both said that I destroyed the holiday by being so careless.
My dad claims he understands why I did what I did. But he thinks I should have informed him so he didn’t squander money. He stated he would have agreed to my ruse.
I feel horrible about spending money, but I’ve gone to Disneyland previously. And I’ll go back later by myself or friends.
