Drivers Over 70: They ‘Won’t Legally Be Allowed To Drive’ After …

In the UK, many media outlets reported that elderly drivers ‘won’t legally be allowed to drive’ after milestone birthday

Older motorists and drivers over 70 could find they “won’t be allowed to drive” due to rules around DVLA driving licence renewal.

Older drivers won’t legally be allowed to drive under a DVLA rule. Older motorists and drivers above the age of 70 could find they “won’t be allowed to drive” due to rules around DVLA driving licence renewal.

Age UK claimed drivers who forget to renew their driving licence won’t be allowed on the roads.

Age UK said: “The DVLA should send you a D46P application form 90 days before your 70th birthday.

“Don’t forget to apply for any extra categories of vehicle covered on your old licence if you still want to be able to drive them.” The charity went on and said: “There might be extra costs for these but if you don’t apply for these extra categories you’ll only be able to drive a car in future.

“If your licence expires and you don’t apply for a new one, you won’t legally be allowed to drive.”

Under DVLA rules, motorists can renew their driving licence at 70 online, with the service being completely free for road users. Rules state people who are set to turn 70 in the next 90 days can also renew online, which could take the stress away from a birthday.

Also, drivers can apply for their licence renewal by post using the D46P application form sent out to drivers by the DVLA.

And road users will also be able to fill out the D1 application for a driving licence form.

The Labour Party government says new driving licence photocards should arrive within three weeks, although this may take longer if any medical or personal details need to be checked.

Age UK added: “It can take up to 3 weeks to renew your licence if you apply by post, so you might prefer to renew online instead. Register on GOV.UK and follow step-by-step instructions on how to renew.”
