I spent hours making a surprise cake for my son’s 7th birthday party.
My MIL knew about it, but she arrived at the party with a huge Batman cake that she had ordered, telling my son, “No one can surprise you better than Grandma.”
Naturally, my son was so distracted by her fancy cake that he totally forgot about mine. I wanted my cake to be a cherished memory for him, and my MIL ruined that for me.
Feeling furious, I put her cake in the trash in front of everyone. My husband came to me and said,
“You need to go now and apologize to my mother. What you did is beyond disrespectful.”
Of course, I refused to apologize because I did nothing wrong here.
The whole party felt like an awkward gathering, and all the guests were silent after what happened.
My MIL felt uncomfortable and left shortly before we cut the cake I’d made. Do you think I overreacted here?
