My Stepson’s Mom Insists She Has the “Right” to Have a Key to Our House

Our children’s safety should be prioritized above everything else. However, some people may resort to unconventional methods to achieve this goal.

Recently, a woman named Sandra found herself in a dilemma when the mother of her stepson insisted on having a key to their home. Sandra is concerned about the invasion of privacy, but her husband sees no issue with it. Sandra has turned to us for guidance in this matter.

She wrote:

“My 7-year-old stepson, Jimmy, stays with us on the weekends. Sunday, my husband and I went on a date night, and we hired a babysitter.

When his ex-wife found out that we weren’t home, she caused a scene. Now, she demands a key in case there’s an emergency, and we’re not there with her son.

She even declared,

“I have the right to have it.”

My husband says, “We can’t blame her for worrying. She’s his mother.” I refused, stating that his ex-wife doesn’t have the right to have a key to our house.

My husband argues that she would only use it for emergencies if Jimmy needed something, and we weren’t home.

He declared, “Stop acting like Jimmy’s mom is a thief. I am sure she won’t do anything that invades our privacy if we give her a spare key.”

I strongly disagree because we’re only away for a few hours on some nights, and we hire a babysitter whose responsibility is to care for the boy.

What should we do?

Sandra”
